The Magnificent Eight

Earlier today I completed a new railway proofreading project for Pen & Sword Books, this being the final part of a trilogy about the Great Western Railway’s Castle class steam locomotives. Previously I had proofread the first two volumes in the series, which covered the story from 1923 to 1959 (part one) and then to 1965 (part two). This final part completed the story of these wonderful locomotives, and highlighted the eight class members which have survived into the modern preservation era. Jointly written by David Maidment and Bob Meanley, the story gave a vivid impression of the hard work needed to keep these engines running, in particular on the modern domestic railway system. A superb cross-section of pictures both colour and black and white backed up the text. The result was a high-quality book, a worthy conclusion to the trilogy.
