I have today finished a new proofreading project for Pen & Sword Books, this one being about the railways of the Sirhowy Valley in South Wales. Written by well-known author John Hodge, the manuscript is an illustrated history of the railways in this part of the world, constructed primarily to serve the needs of the adjacent coal industry. As well as being a railway history, some background is also given to the workings of the mines themselves and those who worked there. Although much of the system is now defunct, the book shows how, in its heyday, the railway network was complex, providing a useful passenger service as well as distributing the coal mined in the various pits in the area.
