Return to Carlisle

My latest completed proofreading project for Pen & Sword Books is a railway picture book, the subject being the last ten years of steam locomotive operation in and around Carlisle from 1957 to 1967. Author Howard Routledge has gathered together a comprehensive group of illustrations taken by a number of photographers, including Mr Routledge himself. Apart from Carlisle Citadel itself, chapters are also given over to a look at the three main locomotive sheds in the locality, Kingmoor, Upperby and Canal , and, in a change of direction, the interiors of a number of working signal boxes are seen. One of the photographers who contributed to the book was a signalman during the period in question. An atmospheric, high quality and worthy tribute to the myriad of steam engines that kept the trains running during the awkward period of time in question.
