Railway Memories

A further completed railway proofreading project has just left my desk bound for Pen & Sword Books. This one draws on the collective memories of eight men who lived in and around the Barnsley and surrounding area of Yorkshire. As boys they were all interested in railways and they each describe their days train-spotting together with, in a single case, one person who spent a period of time as a fireman at the very end of domestic steam. I cannot recall coming across a book quite like this one. The reader is transported back to the days of the late 1940s, 1950s and 1960s, and oozes nostalgia. A feast of memories for those who were there and for those too young (like myself), a fascinating insight into this now much maligned hobby – a simple source of fun and pleasure when in its pomp.
