My latest completed proofreading project for Pen & Sword Books was a picture book about what was described by the manuscript’s author, the late Bernard H. Warr, as the “biggest bus company outside of London”. The company in question was Midland Red and from 1904 to 1981 (when the company was split into regional divisions) it ran buses and coaches across a huge part of the Midlands area of England. The photographs used drew on the collection of the late author, who was a former employee of the company, and atmospherically capture a bygone era, before nationalisation in the late 1960s. Midland Red even built their own buses, tailor-made for their services. Mr Warr’s knowledge of (and passion for) the vehicles used comes across strongly. A gentle journey through time.
