A Political Proofread

My latest completed proofreading project for Pen & Sword Books has been one very different from my usual subjects. This was a biography about Ernest Marples, the Government’s Minister of Transport from 1959 to 1964 and the man who appointed Dr Richard Beeching to compile his ‘Reshaping of British Railways Report’ during the early 1960s. The manuscript charts Mr Marples’ early life and his election as a backbench Member of Parliament and then his rise into Government, beginning in the Housing Department. A very readable and most interesting story, not only into Mr Marples’ political career but into political attitudes and thinking of the time, in particular with regards to the railways and their possible future role – very different from today.
